Union County Receives Spirit of North Carolina Award
The United Way of North Carolina is honoring Union County with the Spirit of North Carolina Award for its exemplary support of the United Way and its community partnerships. In 2020, Union County Government encouraged all of its approximately 1,500 employees to support the community they serve, by donating to our organization’s campaign. A total 194 employees, about 13% of employees, pledged a total of $33,801.66 to support the United Way and the many community organizations it works with. Additionally, Union County’s annual golf tournament to benefit the United Way raised $14,856, bringing the County’s total contribution to $48,658.16.
“I am very proud of the generosity of our employees and their investment in this community, whether they live in Union County or not,” said Mark Watson, County Manager. “This recognition from the United Way is appreciated and confirms not only to our employees, but to the entire state, that Union County is committed to serving our community and exemplifying the spirit of service.”
The United Way presented county leaders with the Spirit of North Carolina award in the category of Campaign/Participation Growth during a virtual award ceremony on March 3, 2021. From 2019 to 2020, the number of Union County employees who offered a financial pledge increased by 10.8%.
“We strive year-round to do everything we can to support community partnerships, services, and programs,” said Michelle Lancaster, Deputy County Manager. “I’ve seen the impact of our campaign first-hand and I’m proud of our continued collaboration with the United Way to serve Union County residents.”
The Spirit of North Carolina Award offers United Ways in North Carolina communities an opportunity to honor organizations whose United Way campaigns exemplify the “spirit” of their community. Winners meet specific standards of achievement and are selected by a team of United Way leaders from across the state. United Way of North Carolina leads the award nomination and judging process and presents the award annually. In March 2021, United Way of North Carolina recognized 78 Spirit of North Carolina Award winners and three Excellence in Community Spirit Award winners. These companies and organizations have not only demonstrated excellence in their United Way campaign, but are building a philanthropic culture community-wide.
