CARES Act Funding 

With federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act funding made available from Mecklenburg County and the City of Charlotte, United Way of Central Carolinas and Foundation For The Carolinas will distribute a total of $4 million in grants to critical nonprofit organizations who have experienced revenue losses or expense increases as a direct result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The funding expands the local community’s capacity to address the social, health and economic impacts of coronavirus, allowing organizations to remain financially solvent and continue to support individuals and families in Charlotte and Mecklenburg County. Download report for more information.

Requested funding may only be used for expenses eligible under the federal CARES Act that have been or will be incurred between March 20, 2020 and December 30, 2020 and that are not already covered by other public or private funding sources.

Organizations receiving funding must submit the required financial documentation to substantiate each expenditure made by 

November 30, 2020 until December 4, 2020. Expenditures made between December 1 to December 30, 2020 must be substantiated by January 4, 2021.

Eligibility Guidelines

Before applying, please review all information about

Eligible Expenses and Funding Areas.

Organizations based in and providing services to City of Charlotte and/or Mecklenburg County residents.

501 (c) 3 organizations established on or before January 1, 2017.

Organizations that maintain an operating budget equal to or greater than $50,000.

Organizations that provide direct services

or community facing activities.

Organizations must also have the ability to document unexpected program expenses related to:

  • Increased incremental operational expenses in response to COVID-19.
  • Reductions in planned net revenues due to cancellations of revenue generating activities.
